The Child Assault Prevention Program (CAP) was approved by the Clark County School District in 2004 for all students in second grade. CAP is internationally renowned and has trained facilitators in 32 states and 10 countries. CAP is considered one of America’s most innovative and comprehensive prevention programs. A research-based program, proven effective by a Rutgers University study, the CAP program empowers students to be SAFE, STRONG and FREE.
Clark County CAP
CAP was implemented as a standard of curriculum in Washoe County in 1993. Each year the program is presented to about 10,000 second grade students in Washoe County classrooms. The Children’s Trust Fund, MGM Mirage Voice Foundation, and Nevada Community Foundation provided a significant portion of the funds needed to initiate and maintain the CAP program.
In Clark County, The Nevada Coalition Against Sexual Violence and the Clark County School District plan to implement the CAP program over a three-year period, at which time the Clark County School District will take over the program and continue to implement CAP in all second grade classrooms.
Core CAP Components
CAP has five core components that focus on bullying; advocating for oneself and others; tricks that strangers might use; how people they know might take away their rights; and how to ask a trusted adult for help. CAP also uses role play to build skills and teach assertiveness.
CAP Transition to RCC
As a statewide organization NCASV's mission has been to seed CAP and move it to a local program. NCASV completed its three year implementation program at the end of the June 2006 grant cycle. CAP has been successfully transitioned to The Rape Crisis Center. The former CAP Program Coordinator, Holly Brunton, is a consultant to the transition project to The Rape Crisis Center.
